As an urban planning intern in Jerusalem, I worked on a UN grant that aimed to create green spaces in the city. My role was to support the architects in the design process by providing data on community travel patterns, as well as assisting community planners in conducting public participation-based research to understand community needs.
Working in both East and West Jerusalem, I gained a deep understanding of the tense political situation in the city and collaborated with urban planners in each area to determine the best ways to support the different community needs. This required me to navigate complex political and social dynamics while remaining focused on the project's goals.
My work on the UN grant was critical in ensuring that the project's design was grounded in data and community input. By gathering and analyzing information on travel patterns, I was able to help the architects create green spaces that were accessible and functional for residents. Additionally, my work on public participation-based research ensured that the community's needs were at the forefront of the planning process.
Throughout my internship, I gained valuable experience in urban planning, community engagement, and navigating complex political and social dynamics. I had the opportunity to make a tangible impact on the city of Jerusalem by creating green spaces that improve the quality of life for residents.
Overall, my experience as an urban planning intern in Jerusalem provided me with a unique perspective on the challenges and opportunities of urban planning in a complex and politically charged environment. It was a valuable learning experience that will undoubtedly inform my future work in the field.
